After 30 years spent scratching together a middle-class life out of a “dirt poor” childhood, Joe Bageant moved back to his hometown of Winchester, Virginia, where he realized that his family and neighbors were the very people who carried George W. Bush to victory. That was ironic, because Winchester, like countless American small towns, is fast becoming the bedrock of a permanent underclass. Two in five of the people in his old neighborhood do not have high-school diplomas. Nearly everyone over 50 has serious health problems, and many have no health care. Credit ratings are low or nonexistent, and alcohol, overeating, and Jesus are the preferred avenues of escape.
A raucous mix of storytelling and political commentary, Deer Hunting with Jesus is Bageant’s report on what he learned by coming home. He writes of his childhood friends who work at factory jobs that are constantly on the verge of being outsourced; the mortgage and credit-card rackets that saddle the working poor with debt, i.e., “white trashonomics”; the ubiquitous gun culture - and why the left doesn’t get it; Scots Irish culture and how it played out in the young life of Lynddie England; and the blinkered “magical thinking” of the Christian right. (Bageant’s brother is a Baptist pastor who casts out demons.)
What it all adds up to, he asserts, is an unacknowledged class war. By turns brutal, tender, incendiary, and seriously funny, this book is a call to arms for fellow progressives with little real understanding of “the great beery, NASCAR-loving, church-going, gun-owning America that has never set foot in a Starbucks”.
Deer Hunting with Jesus is a potent antidote to what Bageant dubs “the American hologram” - the televised, corporatized virtual reality that distracts us from the insidious realities of American life.

An excellent book, way better than, “Hillbilly Elegy”.

I’ve been called a Nazi-Racist every time say Trump’s rally speeches are “funny” by family, friends and workmates.
So I had no choice but to resist such vial and evil hate and instead support Trump.
Miserable Liberals have turned into raging balls of hate after a long history of spreading love and peace and free speech. Now they fight against free speech and kiss the asses of the old establishment.
Why did this happen? I miss the old progressives.
Thanks for listening. #peace

hint: you were always a Nazi-Racist, especially judging by all your comments here.

Poor old Joe. Boo-hoo! Waaaaaaah!
Guess what, Joe, we all have to work hard to succeed. I grew up wondering when my mom would lose her house. She didn’t have so much as a GED. My wide grew up in and out of homeless shelters. Today we’re middle class, and live in a middle house neighborhood. We were getting overweight, and decided it’s time to lose it, for our health’s sake. It’s called America, where you get to decide your future. Why in the world do you think that it’s everyone else’s responsibility???

@mememine69 -
Ironic that you sit there and accuse progressives of the same thing that you yourself are doing. That seems to be the defining characteristic of Trumpian Republicans these days: unbelievable hypocrisy and the willingness to believe *anything* that comes out of Trump’s mouth: literally the most dishonest president in US history.
I remember when Republicans had integrity, decency and honor. They were the adults in the room. Now they’rem just this party of sycophantic cowards with a white-hot hatred of their fellow citizens and the total selling out of their souls and morals to sustain and protect a narcissistic mad man who would happily watch America burn to a cinder if it meant him not having to admit he was wrong.
How far they’ve fallen. They no longer assess information on merit, but instead on whether it’s flattering to their god-emperor, Trump. Trump regularly villainizes any free speech which isn’t servile and scraping towards him, and people like you complain that liberals want to squash free speach. lol. He does generational damage to our country, alienating our allies, providing aid and comfort to our long-standing adversaries such as Russia & North Korea. He claims he’s fighting corruption in the Ukraine when he calls for them to publicly investigate his political opponents, but then in the same breath, he defends murderous dictators like Putin and Kim Jong and instead blames America with statements such as “what, you think we’re so innocent?” Trump Republicans have given up their decency and reason, and all to protect this wretched piece of garbage that’s actively destroying our country.
It’s sad, really. Republicans are willing to watch the country burn for no other reason than Trump refuses to admit that he ever does anything other than perfectly. So they don their tinfoil hats, blame everything on “fake news” and the “deep state” and watch as our enemies laugh at us, our allies make plans without us, and we slowly lose our influence and respect in the world.
When the history books review the smoking ashes of the once-great America, they will show that Republicans stopped caring about God and country, and instead put their energy into supporting a demonstrably deceptive and hypocritical president above anything else. Republicans can’t be taken seriously for at least a generation, because everything they’ve cried and whined about over the past 3 decades they’ve completely gone back on in their support of Trump. They have no backbone - no integrity - just sycophantic worship of a terrible person who regularly lies to them - and they just smile and ask for more. What a pathetic legacy.
