  @Jem, not that I’m defending these L. Ron Hubbard books, because they were pretty bad, but only the first was published before Hubbard died. The other 9 were ghost written.

  @Jem - So you’re saying L Ron was a seminal sf writer? The ratings of his books on amazon are kept artificially high by true believers, who have no compunction about going clear and misleading the rest of us.

  He wrote it all as a single book. Then, ordered it cut up into 10 books. Because money.
  Book(s) were edited by Robert Vaughn Young (after Hubbard fired the original editor for suggesting a possibility that something, anything, may need to be cut out), approved by RLH and sent out for pre-publication reviews.
  Reviews were bad (as would be expected) and came back with comments that it feels like as if someone took a larger book and simply cut it up into 10 small ones.

  So, RVY came up with a solution of an in-universe intro and summary at the beginning of each book.
  Suggestion was approved by RLH (after some heavy massaging of his ego and waving money in front of his nose) - so RVY ghosted all the intros for volumes 2-10.

  I got these books as they came out; I’m pretty sure that he was partly into book 8 at the time of his death, despite one volume’s intro that LRH had completed ‘every word’ before his passing. That’s because midway through volume 8, the point of view suddenly shifts from first to third person (or maybe it was the other way ’round, it’s been a while) and the writing style changes dramatically. I thought the books themselves up until then were ok, but not great.

  @granular - thanks for the link, like the series, it was a bit long winded for my taste as it could have been summed up with: Hubbard was an arrogant self-absorbed ass, that believed his own BS. Or perhaps Young was just covering his butt for the poor work.

  As Hubbard was dead 3 months after the first book was published, it’s not like he could have had a say in how the rest of the work was done. Young and company could have only improved the material. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_Earth_(novel_series)

  But that would have involved work, and why spend efforts on something that you’re marketing just off the author’s name.

  Sorry Guys, I sort of loved Battlefield Earth, both the book and the movie. No, I’m not a Scientologist the whole religion thing to me is fantasy but there again I’m not knocking the Bible, Torra or Koran - I never criticise books I’ve never bothered to read.

  Thanks for the upload and the rest remember that Scifi has always been that jump down the rabbit hole

  @Delf338 - I too enjoyed Battlefield Earth (the novel) as light entertainment reading. As for the movie, it was ok, I’ve watched a lot worse than that.

  But give Mission Earth a listen, and then post back and give your opinion.

  I got the first one whole I was waiting for a train to go “inter railing”, which was a long time ago. Knew nothing of Hubbard or Scientology at the time. I thought it was quite witty in parts and got around to the other nine in turn. I still think they’re fun.

  Battlefield Earth is still one of my all-time favorites. Mission Earth, mhhhh. First 4 was pretty good, next 2 were ok, the rest… terrible!!
