If you’re willing to get past all the interruptions and let it unfold, there’s a detective story in here somewhere about missing budgies, aliens, and the Fish People (cue ominous noise). There’s a lot to get past, though, including a parody of a radio station (dubbed Radio Milton Springsteen), a parody of the Jam, repeated interruptions by Dave the Technician, and ongoing chitchat about the breakup of Chris and Judith, a couple that both Alexei and Dave know. There are a lot of leftie political messages thrown in gratuitously (mostly digs at the government), which shouldn’t be any surprise to those who know Sayle’s other work. Tacked onto the end of the whole confusing affair is “‘Ullo John! Gotta New Motor?,” which became a very unlikely minor hit single. It’s anarchic, absurd, and a lot of fun.
